Documentation is the registration of a vessel with the Federal Government (United States Coast Guard). Most pleasure vessels over 26 feet meet the requirement of five (5) net tons to be documented. Federal documentation provides legal assurance that your vessel is a United States flagged/registered vessel. This designation is generally accepted world wide, simplifying port entry requirements. Documentation can be renewed annually at no additional cost.
As a condition of a loan, many financial institutions may require federal documentation prior to closing. This is because the Coast Guard has a stringent title requirement, ensuring your vessel is being purchased clear of liens, encumbrances, etc.
Don't wait in those long lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Connecticut law requires the application for vessel registration be presented in person. Let Wildoats Marine Service, LLC complete this task for you. Connecticut also requires that a vessel be registered with the state even if it is federally documented and remains in state waters for greater than sixty (60) days.
